El Mayo’s arrest, whitexicans & cocktail pop-up
Welcome to another edition of CDMX iykyk!
I'm back from a dreamy vacation in Chiapas and Oaxaca. While catching up on the news, one story stood out to me: the surprising arrest of Sinaloa cartel leader 'El Mayo' Zambada and Chapo's son, Joaquín Guzmán López.
Okay, let’s go.

U.S. Arrests of Sinaloa Cartel Leaders Spark Treason Investigation in Mexico
On July 25, Sinaloa Cartel leaders Ismael 'El Mayo' Zambada García and Joaquín Guzmán López, son of 'El Chapo,' were arrested upon arriving in El Paso, Texas. Their capture has prompted Mexican prosecutors to consider treason charges against those responsible for their handover.
Tell me more.
El Mayo, who has led the Sinaloa Cartel for decades, now faces charges similar to those that led to the life sentence of his co-founder, Joaquín 'El Chapo' Guzmán, in 2019. Zambada and Guzmán López were arrested by U.S. authorities in a joint FBI and Homeland Security operation. While there are reports of a voluntary surrender, El Mayo claims he was deceived and kidnapped by Guzmán López.
In response, Mexico's Attorney General's Office launched an investigation into possible crimes, including illegal flight, illicit airport use, immigration violations, kidnapping, and treason. According to Mexico's penal code, treason includes illegally abducting someone in Mexico to deliver them to foreign authorities, a crime punishable by up to 40 years in prison.
Zambada will face trial in New York on charges of fentanyl trafficking, money laundering, and conspiracy to commit murder, while Guzmán López is charged with trafficking cocaine, heroin, meth, and other drugs.
What does this mean?
President Andrés Manuel López Obrador expressed support for the treason investigation and the outcome of this remains to be seen.
As for the future of the Sinaloa Cartel, the arrests of Zambada and Guzman Lopez may trigger instability and an increase in violence as the organization grapples with the loss of its leaders.
