Oh, the irony

Reverse Migration, Tech Week & La Maquina

Hola hola!

We're back to our usual programming—well, almost. Today’s topic is a bit special and personal, as it dives into a growing trend of Mexican immigrants' children leaving the U.S. to make Mexico their home. I’m part of this “reverse migration” movement, and in a recent article, I share my own story of why I chose to return to Mexico (linked below).

Let’s get into it.

Reverse Migration: A Wave of Mexican-Americans Move to Mexico

A growing number of U.S.-raised Mexican-American kids are obtaining Mexican passports and choosing to live in their parents' homeland.

Tell me more.

More than 25 years after Mexico began recognizing dual citizenship, many U.S.-born children of Mexican immigrants are claiming their right to Mexican nationality. Since its official recognition of dual citizenship in 1998, Mexico has actively reminded its diaspora of this constitutional right. In 2021, the government expanded eligibility to future generations born outside the country.

Let’s unpack this.

Mexican consul general in Los Angeles, Carlos González Gutiérrez, highlighted that expanding citizenship abroad is in Mexico's geopolitical interest. Nearly 60% of U.S. Latinos are of Mexican descent, positioning future generations to significantly influence cross-border relations.

But there's an interesting twist: many Mexican-Americans are not just reclaiming their Mexican citizenship—they're moving to Mexico.

Since the pandemic, a growing number of Mexican-Americans, including myself, are choosing Mexico over the U.S. While their reasons vary, their motivations reflect those of their immigrant parents: the pursuit of a better life. For many, it’s also about reconnecting with their heritage and ancestral roots.

What does this mean?

Take, for example, YouTube content creators Jenny Aguayo-Frausto and Kevin Frausto who saw the ‘American Dream’ reach a ceiling in the U.S. “We got the financial and educational benefit of growing up and living in the United States,” Jenny said. “Now, it’s time for us to take it a step further and look for the next level of quality of life, but in Mexico.”

If you have a similar story, please get in touch, as I’d love to interview you for the article series I’m writing on this topic.
